Greetings Dr. Scott-Mumby,
I'm an expert with lasers and electro-optics, designing for almost 30 years. I was skeptical for years when people made claims about lasers and LEDs healing. I didn't see any literature to support it, but also didn't look for it. In the last 2 years, I've made a complete revision of my opinion. These things are near-miraculous. Lot's of literature to support it. I heartily recommend "The Laser Therapy Handbook" by Tune'r and Hode. Also the works of Tiina Karu.
I want to make a small correction in your statement here. Lasers and LEDs can cause equal heating with equal power levels. There is significant evidence that lasers are more effective for healing than LEDs due to coherence, but also that LEDs are quite effective. In most cases, the wavelength chosen can be based on the depth of penetration desired. Infrared goes deeper than visible, even through bone.
I tried an experiment last week that stunned me. I had dental work done and when the anesthetic wore off, I was in intense pain. I used an infrared laser through the cheek into the trigeminal nerve and surrounding tissue for about 5 minutes. The pain relief was immediate and complete. I went from incapacitated by pain to completely pain free in about 1/2 hour, most of it in the first 5 minutes.
This field needs much more study. I am rapidly forming the opinion that lasers can be used for almost everything that requires healing. Of course that's not true, but it is worth trying since it is simple, no side effects in proper dosage, and often effective. The list of known effective medical and dental indications covers several pages of fine print in the book referenced above.
An important observation I need to offer: Many of the currently marketed devices utilize arrays of LEDs and or lasers of different wavelengths that are flashed in various combinations. There is significant evidence that some combinations of wavelengths can negate all of the benefits, and other combinations can enhance it somewhat. In general it is better to use only one wavelength in a session unless it is certain that the combination is better. In some cases, there is a time delay requirement of an hour or more between exposures to achieve synergistic combinations. Most beneficial combinations require that visible red is used after either the longer or shorter wavelength, not before.
My earlier opinion of lasers not being effective was based on trying a device that used multiple wavelengths and finding that it did not make much difference.

Could you please explain what exactly this phrase means:
Pacific Health Options are the only group in the whole of North America with FDA approval for the SCENAR.

Hi,
I'm giving you another update on my use of the SCENAR for alleviating the discomfort of my Morton's Neuroma (in both feet.) Having almost relented to surgery to remove the painful little "XX&(##'s), I checked out my use of the SCENAR with the Prof. Basically, what I learned was that I was not using the device nearly enough as I should. Trying to ease the discomfort or pain of a chronic condition is not the same as "treating oneself for a sprained or twisted ankle." The latter is a "piece of cake" with the SCENAR. However, to remedy a long term problems e.g. 10+years, you have to be more consistent and more aggressive...at least, that is my point of view. To make a long story short, I have now "become friends" with the intimidating device i.e. SCENAR. I know that it is safe to use (providing you don't take a bath with it!) and that, it will work, but 'it does so at it's own time frame...not mine or yours!) I am now using the SCENAR every other day or so, and have gotten comfortable enough with it to try out some new settings. (There are really only a couple settings you need to learn, and, you can learn those quickly, if you get the right teacher!) By using the few settings, and now pinpointing where the problem is, I am getting much better results. However, I have a tendency to "over do" a good thing. If I spend too much time with the puppy, it "bites me in the ___! What that means to those of you who are using the SCENAR for whatever purpose, don't overdo it! You will experience a state of malaise, which is not conducive to getting work done. Suggest that you keep the time down to about a 1/2 hour. That way, you probably will avoid the "over use" syndrome! If you experience the overuse syndrome, you will have to double your intake of Red Bull! So much for that. Will get back to you with further insights into how to use the SCENAR without being intimidated by it. It really works well!

Dr. Scott-Mumby
As I discussed in my communication with you, you don't understand FDA laws and regulations. The only devices or drugs that can say they are "FDA Approved" are devices or drugs that have been evaluated by the FDA using a procedure called a PreMarket Approval. This involves several years of testing under a study approved by an Investigational Review Board. If the FDA approves the outcomes of the studies, it issues an IDE (Investigational Device Exemption) that allows the manufacturer/importer to call the device "FDA Approved". Devices or drugs that do not have an IDE cannot legally say that!
The devices that are FDA 510k exempted as biofeedback device cannot say that they treat pain. They can only say that they are used for "muscle relaxation and re-education". This is the status of the devices that Dr. Hache has listed and he cannot legally say that they are good for anything except muscle relaxation or re-education. His listing of the devices on his website as "FDA Approved" is illegal since he does not possess an IDE for it.
Devices that have undergone the 510K process to prove that they are "substantially equivalent" to a predicate device are given the right by the FDA to say that they are "FDA Listed"(NOT FDA Approved) for chronic intractable pain and postoperative pain. As far as I know, the only SCENAR-type devices that can legally say they are FDA Listed for pain are my Tennant Biomodulator, the Avazzia devices, and the InterX-5002.

As I told you in the past, one cannot expect a European to know US FDA law. However, those who break it will eventually be visited by the FDA.

I would hope that you would know the facts before making a personal attack as you have done on this blog. I have been a long-time admirer of your work and expect more great things from you in the future.

Be Well!

I have had three sessions with two persons trained in the use of the SCENAR. I have had a "foot problem" for over 10 years, in which both feet have symptoms similiar to that of Morton's Neuroma. I do not however, have that condition. After having gone to about five or six podiatrists for many years, none of these professionals was able to diagnose and/or successfully treat my problem. I wasted about $1000 on orthotics, which only made the problem worse. At other times, I was given cortisone shots. The only people the cortisone shots helped were the doctors. After a few hours, the drugs wore off, and I was back to square one. Oh yeah, one other esteemed podiatrist, said that I needed to purchase another pair of New Balance shoes. The shoes are very good, but at $200 a pop, I expected that there would be some relief. Negative. To make a long story short, I heard "the Prof" on Coast To Coast in 2006. He spoke of the SCENAR at the time, and he made a lot of sense. Several years later, after hearing his webcast on the SCENAR along with Dr. John Heche and his wife Lorry, I decided that it was time to try the SCENAR and see if the thing really worked or not. I had to travel to Escondido for my "first treatment." That's quite a way from Woodland Hills, where my wife and I live. However, it was worth the trip. The SCENAR actually worked. It did not "cure" my foot condition, but I could tell afterwards, that there was "less discomfort" than before. I followed up the first visit with two more sessions with a practitioner closer to home, in Venice,CA. Again, the progress was "slow" but steady. It was NOT a five-minute cure! What happened after the second SCENAR session, was that I ordered the puppy from Dr. Heche. If the device was able to provide some relief, I figured I would give it a shot by taking the training, and treating myself with it about 3x/week. I am waiting for delivery of the SCENAR as I write this. I will keep everyone updated. One other thing, I have a "belly-button" hernia that is a "pain-in-the-..." more than anything else. Just to let you know, after one session with the SCENAR the hernia flattened out in about five minutes. It returned, but is not as big as before. I think that is pretty amazing! I will also "treat" the hernia with the SCENAR. That's about it for now. It's almost "Showtime"...when the SCENAR arrives at my doorstep, I will continue to check out it's effectiveness. Right now, after my three sessions, I can tell you this...it appears to be working!
